  • All-terrain tires are great for most off-road use. Modern all-terrain tires are designed to deliver a great balance of off-road performance and traction along with road manners, handling, ride quality, and wear properties that are capable and composed on the pavement. All-terrain tires are available with aggressive tread designs, damage-resistant tread compounds, and tough construction for most off-road conditions, but for deep and sloppy mud or aired-down rock crawling over steep boulders, obstacles, and other challenges, often all-terrain tires fall short of getting the job done. That’s where mud-terrain tires step in to fill the gap.

Mud-terrain tires are designed for the rugged performance and unbeatable traction that you need in those kinds of conditions, and the Supertrac M/T from Pantera is a great example of what these kinds of tires are supposed to be about. It’s a tire that’s packed with design features and top-quality materials to ensure that you’re going to be able to get out there and back without breaking a sweat, even in the sloppiest, soupiest mud or the roughest terrain. But don’t take our word for it, let’s go in for a closer look with this Pantera Supertrac M/T review:

    Features and Benefits

Here are some of the features and innovations that make the Pantera Supertrac M/T such a strong performer and a great value in the world of mud-terrain tires:

    • Aggressive lug tread with void ratio optimized to easily eject mud, stones, and debris from the grooves, ensuring that there’s always a clear section of tread to dig in for traction as the wheel turns
    • Extra-tough damage-resistant tread formulation guards against punctures, cuts, and abrasions even in aired-down operations over rocks and obstacles
    • The casing is reinforced with three layers of polyester cord fabric and a high-tensile steel belt package
    • Reinforced sidewall with steel belts to guard against punctures and impacts
    • Staggered shoulder block sizes are designed for lateral traction and improved control and handling on irregular surfaces or muddy terrain
    • Angled lateral, angled, and longitudinal grooves help to ensure good drainage of water or slush, resisting hydroplaning on wet pavement and enhancing grip, braking, and control on wet, soggy ground
    • Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certified for use in moderate to severe winter weather
    • Shoulder blocks reinforced and designed for improved handling and control on or off the pavement

    Pros and Cons

So, is this Pantera tire the right choice for your ride and budget? Before you decide, let’s take a look at the tire’s pros and cons.

    PROS:

    • Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated for severe winter service
    • Superb protection against damage
    • Steel-belted sidewall reinforcement is an innovative feature
    • Very capable tire for aired-down performance while rock crawling

    CONS:

    • Can be noisy on some pavement surfaces
    • No limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty coverage
    • Fuel efficiency could be better

SimpleTire’s view on Pantera Supertrac M/T tires

There are plenty of mud-terrain tires out there on the market at a lot of different price points, but it’s our take that the Pantera Supertrac M/T delivers a lot of performance and value for the money. Are you familiar with SimpleScore? SimpleScore is the system that the SimpleTire team has developed to give you a quick at-a-glance idea of a tire’s strengths and weaknesses. We consider the tire’s spec sheet, manufacturer’s info, customer reviews, and other data points, then take that information and distill it into a 1-10 numerical value for the categories of traction, handling, and longevity, as well as an overall average SimpleScore. In the case of the Pantera Supertrac M/T, the SimpleScore numbers look like this:

    • Traction: 7.6
    • Handling: 8.1
    • Longevity: 8.5
    • Overall average SimpleScore: 8.1

Obviously, on a scale of 1-10, those are all some pretty respectable numbers.

The Supertrac M/T is nothing if not durable, with that damage-resistant tread formulation and reinforced casing with its steel belt package and fabric ply layers. It’s pretty unusual to see a steel-reinforced sidewall (something that’s more often found on tires for construction equipment and industrial machines), and this tire is more than up to the job when it comes to aired-down rock crawling. As far as winter performance, the 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake rating sets the bar pretty high, and the Pantera answers the call on that as well. And then in the deepest, soupiest, most gravy-like mud, the aggressive tread blocks and extra-deep grooves of the Pantera deliver a confident grip while easily shedding mud, rocks, and debris so there’s always more traction on hand.

It’s true, the Pantera is a little noisy on the pavement (many mud tires are) and it doesn’t have a limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty (many mud tires don’t). Still, ride quality and overall handling on the highway are fairly composed, without the wander and generally squirrely road manners that some mud-terrain tires exhibit. All in all, it’s our opinion here at the SimpleTire team that the Pantera Supertrac M/T is a great performer and a great value in a mud-terrain tire for light trucks, Jeeps, and SUVs.

Was not familiar with this brand, but was excited about the price and tread. I could not be happier. Last set of tires were Mickey Thompson, so that is what I have been comparing them to.

I purchased these tires for my 2014 Ram dually. I have put less than 500 miles on these and the tires have splits forming In them on the edges. All my driving has been on pavement. There's no reason this should happen other than poor manufacturing. Contacted the company directly and they said I had to go through the place I ordered them from (simple tire). Contacted simple tire and they said no warranty on these due to being a mud tire. I understand no road hazard and if I beat them up. But there should be a warranty against defects that aren't my fault.
